Annual Report 2021

For 16 years, the Association of Industrial Partners has been supporting the cooperation of companies, researchers and students in order to achieve the best results all together.

Barbora Bühnová, Dorota Jůvová, Michaela Tóthová, January 27, 2022

SPP logo Brno and the IT industry belong together inseparably. Innovation, especially in IT, will be the driving force behind the development not only of Brno. To make this development more efficient and approachable, we are continuously connecting our university with the world of business. This creates an ecosystem where they complement each other and allows us to dream of Brno as the heart of Central Europe's innovations.

Association of Industrial Partners (SPP FI MU) is a platform that has been actively cooperating with companies for a long time. In 2021, 27 companies were involved in the Association of Industrial Partners, thanks to which a number of activities took place that supported the involvement of academics, students and companies. Students can develop and use their theoretical knowledge in the corporate environment both in the form of final theses and internships or by participating in projects within the cooperation of the company with faculty research laboratories.

This article was created to present to you the achievements of the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University and its partners.

Number of successfully mentored final theses in cooperation with companies is one of the indicators that measures the degree of cooperation regarding the SPP partnership. Last year, students, in cooperation with companies involved in SPP, successfully completed 78 bachelor's and master's theses. In cooperation with InvaSys, Lexical Computing, Red Hat Czech, Monet+, Flowmon Networks, Nexa Technologies, Tescan and Wereldo were awarded 9 final theses the Dean's Award for bachelor and master students.

VF Nuclear is involved in the project called TAČR Integrated spectrometric system for free release of radioactive waste VF Nuclear. Wereldo spoke about the cooperation with the Faculty of Informatics in Radio Journal in the series Innovators.

SPP Day Autumn 2021 As we had to react flexibly to the current situation, both spring and autumn Day with Industrial partners (SPP Day) were organized in an online format. This traditional all-day event offers students and other interested parties at the Faculty of Informatics MU the opportunity to get know how FI MU cooperates with companies in the Association of Industrial Partners (SPP) and learn more about how to actively participate in connecting universities with the world of business and how to benefit from that cooperation.
The program was always divided into 4 main thematic blocks, in which representatives of companies took turns as speakers. We included at the autumn SPP Day a whole new block conducted in English and another block for students and graduates and the presentation of their projects, which they created in cooperation with FI and companies. Among other things, students and visitors had the opportunity to meet with company representatives through online booths on the Discord platform. Once again, thematic workshops from the companies themselves were represented. Participants' feedback was mostly reported inspiring.

More than half of the companies took part in teaching lectures and seminars. One of the most active companies in this respect was Red Hat Czech, which in 2021 introduced a new lecture on “Handling complexity in industry projects with soft management” (within compulsory bachelor's course PB007 Software Engineering I with over 350 students). Konica Minolta included in the subject PA195 NoSQL Databases a lecture on the involvement of NoSQL databases in the projects on which the company works. There was an increase in support of PhD positions to 15 students, not only in cooperation with strategic partners. InvaSys and Red Hat Czech have increased their support in sponsoring PhD students by 50%. Konica Minolta, Lexical Computing and Monet+ also regularly support PhD students. Another 4 PhD students were supported by scholarships from Kentico software, Nexa Technologies, Safetica and Tescan.
As part of PhD student support, Konica Minolta is collaborating on a project that began several years ago as a Proof-of-Concept. Within the PhD support of Atonín Dufka, applied research on the topic 'Authentication protocols using multilateral digital signatures (MPC)' is being carried out in cooperation with Monet+. During the first year of cooperation, a design and prototype implementation of the authentication scheme using MPC was created, and integration into the company's product is now underway.

Lab An important part of the Association of Industrial Partners, without which the cooperation would not be possible and they deserve a big "thank you" for it are FI research groups and laboratories. They include:
CRoCS (Center for Research on Cryptography and Security)
Research Lab Software Architectures and Information Systems (LaSArIS)
Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA)
Design and Architecture of Digital Systems Laboratory (EmLab)

Annual Report 2020

Association of Industrial Partners at the Faculty of Informatics MU – 15 years of support of joint cooperation of companies, student researchers and researchers to reach common goals.

Barbora Bühnová, Dorota Jůvová, Renata Vévodová and Eva Matějková, April 12, 2021

Loga-SPP The Association of Industrial Partners (SPP FI MU) has been operating at the Faculty of Informatics of Masaryk University for 15 years and since its inception it has grown to the current number of 27 actively cooperating companies. SPP is an active platform, thanks to which a number of activities has taken place. The main goal has been to involve academics and students of all levels of study in cooperation with industry. Thus, students can further develop and evaluate their theoretical knowledge in the corporate environment, either in the form of a final thesis, internship or involvement in projects within the cooperation of the company with faculty research laboratories. All partners at the level of strategic partnership also participate in the joint supervision of doctoral students and related joint research.

In terms of cooperation, year 2020 was another successful year.

As part of joint activities, 97 final theses have been successfully finished in cooperation with SPP companies last year. The activities also included a competition for the best bachelor’s/master’s thesis in the field of IT security and applied cryptography, with the participation of Red Hat Czech, Invasys, and Y Soft. Although the topic of security is common in multiple cooperating companies, it is only one of many. For example, the strategic partner Konica Minolta, cooperates with students of all levels and study programs on topics applicable in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and semantic technologies. The strategic partner Red Hat Czech, covers a wide range of topics and is the leading partner in a number of supervised theses. For many companies, the final theses also contribute to research and innovation in the company. One example is the Flowmon Networks company, where bachelor theses often grow into internships focusing directly on the innovative solutions within the company. In general, the theses developed in cooperation are highly regarded in terms of quality and some of them have been awarded the Dean's Award. Last year this was the case for theses completed in cooperation with companies Konica Minolta a Wereldo.com.

Competition 2020 Another successful activity is the Competition for talented students at FI, which is primarily intended for students of the 2nd and 3rd semesters of bachelor studies, and is held once a year. The format of the competition is limited to 24 hours, when students solve tasks in the assignments jointly designed by FI laboratories together with companies from SPP. The reward for successful sudents is the opportunity to obtain a research position in one of the participating laboratories with a company scholarship, and contribute to the collaboration of the two. In 2020, Red Hat Czech, Lexical Computing, Monet+, Y Soft, and Flowmon Networks took part in the competition.

Projects in applied research have started in recent years and continued in 2020. Red Hat Czech. continued in works in TAČR AUFOVER project, together with Honeywell. Konica Minolta participating in the research of Hien Thi Ha, our PhD student, in the field of text and data mining techniques for scanned documents and delivery e.g. in form of reference datasets. TAČR – AHISTO is also an interesting project (historical sources available) in cooperation with Lexical Computing company. We should definitely mention Monet+ and their “Secure Multi-Party Protocols, Cryptographic smartcards”, or Y Soft in TAČR 3D printing project. Flowmon Networks has been involved in the projects of the National Center for Cyber Security and a TAČR project focusing on operation monitoring in the public cloud environment. VF cooperates in a TAČR Trend project – “Integrated spectrometric system for free release of radioactive waste into the environment”. The project “Optimization of freight transport in reliance to market prices” continues with Wereldo.com

An important element in SPP's activities is Day with Industrial Partners which takes place directly at the Faculty of Informatics twice a year. The main goal of the event is to give students the opportunity to get acquainted with the companies cooperating within SPP, to learn more about cooperation, conditions, goals and opportunities to actively benefit from the cooperation. This year for the first time this traditional event unconventionally took place entirely online in a new format. The organizers resorted to this format due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This decision was taken after a discussion whether to even organize the event and how to make it happen. The online format, which was eventually agreed on posed a great challenge to the team. The format was however welcomed by the company representatives, who thankfully actively cooperated and supported the event. It turned out to be a great success, which was apparent in the high number of participants and positive feedback.

The COVID-19 restrictions fortunately did not substantially limit the teaching process and the majority of the companies participated in lectures and seminars.
Company: Participation in lectures:
Invasys PA018, PV079, PV204, PV157
Konica Minolta PV173, IA161, PA153
Lexical Computing IA161, PA153
Red Hat Czech PV080, PB173, PV204, PV181, PV278, PA200
Honeywell PV260
IBM PA181, PA200, PV203
InQool PV247
Monet+ PV256
Y Soft PV260
Daite PPB130, PV162
NXP Semiconductors PV198
Safetica PV177
Sanezoo PB130 PV162
Tescan PB130 PV162
Trusted Network Solutions PA018
VF PA174

In 2020, there was an increase in the number of sponsored PhD positions by SPP's strategic partners. In this form of joint advisory of doctoral students in cooperation between FI and the companies, 13 doctoral students are now studying. The support defined in this way is the condition for a strategic partnership. However, support is also possible outside the strategic partnership within the lower categories of partnership, as in the case of Monet+ and Safetica.

None of this would be possible without the intensive interaction of cooperating companies with FI research teams and laboratories. In this respect, the Center for Research on Cryptography and Security (CRoCS), Laboratory of Software Architectures and Information Systems (Lasaris), Center for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA), Design and Architecture of Digital Systems Laboratory (EmLab), Natural Language Processing Centre (NLP), Sitola Research Laboratory, and Laboratory of Data Intensive Systems and Applications (DISA) are the most active ones.

Another popular contact with students is the organization of competitions and advertisements for internships for students, and job positions for graduates. It is the internships that come to the forefront of the attention of both companies and the faculty within the new study programs at FI MU, for which the internships are a mandatory part of the study. In addition, it is a welcome tool for cooperation, where students apply their knowledge in practice and at the same time get acquainted with the corporate environment. Most of the partners offer internships, however the most active partner in this regard is the IBM company, which offers internships to more than tens of students every year.

Research and teaching cooperation also has a popularizing and cultural overlap. The immensely popular FI Film Festival, held in online format, was supported financially and with prizes by Kentico Software, and Red Hat Czech. Another event of FI, the TSD conference was organized in cooperation with the Lexical Computing company.

We would like to thank all the cooperating companies and participating research laboratories for their active support and cooperation in these difficult times. We wish everyone a successful continuation of the cooperation in the future, and we look forward to emerging activities that you will hopefully appreciate as well.

Therefore, follow the FI information channels so that you do not miss these events!

Annual Report 2019

Association of industrial partners of Faculty of Informatics MU has been 14 years helping students, researchers and companies to join forces in merging theory with practice

Barbora Bühnová, Renata Vévodová and Eva Matějková, April 20, 2020

Loga-SPP-04-20 The Association of Industrial Partners (SPP FI MU) has been operating at the Faculty of Informatics of Masaryk University for 14 years and since its inception has grown to the current 30 actively cooperating companies, which is the current capacity limit. SPP is an active platform, thanks to which a number of activities have taken place, the main goal of which is to involve academics and students of all levels of study in cooperation with industry.

Year 2019 was in terms of cooperation, another successful year. We will be happy if you look back at it with us in a short Annual Report and in more detail in this article.

As part of joint activities, 99 final theses have been successfully finished in cooperation with SPP companies last year. The activities also included a competition for the best bachelor/master thesis in the field of IT security and applied cryptography, with the participation of InvaSys a.s., Y Soft Corporation, a.s., and Trusted Network Solutions, a.s. companies. Although the topic of security is common in multiple cooperating companies, it is only one of many. For example, the strategic partner Konica Minolta Business Solutions Czech, spol. s r. o., cooperates with students of all levels and study programs on topics close to and applicable in the field of artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and semantic technologies. The strategic partner Red Hat Czech, s.r.o., covers a wide range of topics and being the leading partner in the number of supervised theses. In 2019, Red Hat Czech successfully supervised 9 bachelor and 11 master theses. For many companies, the final theses also contribute to research and innovation in the company. An example is the Flowmon Networks, a.s. company, where bachelor theses often grow into internships focused directly on the innovation of Flowmon solutions. Last year, for example, a bachelor thesis was carried out, which led to an extension of the Flowmon solution with new features in the area of automatic product configuration based on monitoring requirements. The author is now on a long-term internship at Flowmon in the experimental development team. In general, the works prepared in cooperation are evaluated as of very high quality and some of them are awarded the Dean's Award, which was last year, for example, the case at Trusted Network Solutions, a.s., Red Hat Czech, s.r.o. or Kiwi.com.

Competition 2019 Another successful activity is the Competition for talented students at FI, which is primarily intended for students of the 2nd and 3rd semesters of bachelor studies, and is held once a year. The format of the competition is limited to 24 hours, when students solve tasks in the assignments jointly designed by FI laboratories together with companies from SPP. The reward for successful researchers is the opportunity to obtain a student position in one of the participating laboratories with a company scholarship, and contribute to the collaboration of the two. In 2019, Red Hat Czech, Konica Minolta, Lexical Computing, AHEAD, Y Soft, Flowmon Networks, Kiwi.com and others took part in the competition. Some companies support more students in this way. For example, MONET +, a.s., in 2019, supported 2 student positions in the field of secure signing using secure multipart cryptographic protocols (SMPC) in the context of mobile applications and smart cards.

Den SPP 11 19 07 An important element in SPP's activities is the Day with Industrial Partners, which takes place directly at the Faculty of Informatics twice a year. The main goal of the event is to give students the opportunity to get acquainted with the companies cooperating within SPP, to learn more about cooperation, conditions, goals and opportunities to actively benefit from the cooperation. Just as SPP itself has evolved over the years, the Day with Industrial Partners awaits changes this year. A new format and program is prepared, which will go even further in the form of thematic blocks of cooperation and successful examples of cooperation. Workshops will be offered by some of the companies.

Events on various topics, individual lectures, workshops and community events for students take place throughout the year. Last year, for example, Red Hat Czech, Kentico Software or IBM prepared them, where Red Hat Czech and Kentico Software have their own premises ready for this purpose in the FI MU building.

Within the SPP, companies have the opportunity to participate in teaching at FI. They can provide individual lectures or full courses in cooperation with FI professors. Last year, for example, Red Hat Czech, Y Soft, IBM, InQool, Kentico, Honeywell, Novanta and others took advantage of this opportunity. The most active in this respect is the Red Hat Czech company, which last year provided invited lectures in more than six courses, and organized numerous other educational events in the Red Hat open source laboratory at the faculty. NXP Semiconductors participated in the modernization of the PV198 Onechip Controllers course, by providing new hardware and content of the course.

In 2019, there was an increase in the number of sponsored PhD positions by SPP's strategic partners. In this form of joint supervision of doctoral students in cooperation between FI and the company, 11 doctoral students are now studying. The support defined in this way is the condition for a strategic partnership. However, support is also possible outside the strategic partnership within the lower categories of partnership, as in the case of TECHNISERV, spol. s r.o., which supports a PhD student with whom they collaborate on individual analyzes and studies.

In addition, it is a welcome tool for cooperation, where students' knowledge is applied in practice and at the same time students get acquainted with challenges faced in industry. A very active partner in this regard is theIBM Global Services Delivery Center Czech Republic, s.r.o. company, which offers internships to more than a dozen students every year. And a small R&D branch of the French company Nexa Technologies CZ s.r.o. last year involved three trainees, to whom they were able to prepare an individual assignment of the problem, which the trainees were able to successfully solve according to their time possibilities and the time dedicated to the internship.

In addition to research and teaching cooperation, the cooperation also has a popularization and cultural overlap. The very popular FI Film Festival was supported by Flowmon Networks as a general sponsor. Financial support was also provided by Kentico Software, 24i Media, Red Hat Czech. Kiwi.com provided the festival with prizes. Honeywell, Kentico, Seacomp, 24i Media have actively helped to popularize science within the Science Night program. Mycroft Mind, 24i Media, Honeywell, AHEAD iTec contributed to attracting new applicants to FI by engaging in the program during the FI Open Days. We are very pleased with the long-term positive relationship of Petr Palas with his alma mater. Petr Palas is a FI graduate and the founder of Kentico, who also supported the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of FI, when he liven up Alumni Day with his lecture.

We would like to thank all the cooperating companies and participating research laboratories. We wish everyone a successful continuation of the cooperation in the future, and we look forward to emerging activities that you can look forward to.

Therefore, follow the FI information channels so that you do not miss these events!
