What is useful to know?
Learn about the most basic things you'll need to know as a learner:
The Study Department
Each learner has a Study Officer based on the initial letter of their surname. Several agendas can be dealt with directly in the Information System, sometimes you may need to go to the Study Office in person.
When communicating with the Study Office by email, write from your official University email
(UČO@mail.muni.cz) to the common address
studijnidjpDGyW4e@fi4ZJjUIHOz.muniARP1jPf5R.cz
. When visiting in person, please visit the office of your Study Officer directly on the 2nd floor of Building A during office hours
.
Information system
Almost all administrative matters at our faculty can be handled online via the Masaryk University Information System (IS MU), which is being actively developed at our faculty.
Enrolment in courses, registration for exams, confirmation of studies, communication with teachers, work with study materials - all this and more can be done from any device after logging into the IS. To log in to IS you will use:
- UČO (University Person Number) - your unique numerical identifier, which you will find out when you enrol.
- Primary password - the password for the MU IS and other single sign-on applications that you set when you enrol (and can change later)
You can get help navigating IS with this .pdf 1.85 MB guide, the help page directly in IS, or the interactive assignments in the IS Academy. You can also take the IS Freshman online webinar during the holiday break.
Everyone has an email inbox in IS with an address in the form of UČO@mail.muni.cz, which works even after you set up a nickname. You should communicate from this address within the faculty and university, do not use your existing private email address for this.
Monitoring university mail is mandatory. You will receive important messages from the faculty administration, the study department, your professors, and the system itself at this address. You can have your mail forwarded to another stable mailbox.
When deleting , ensure that the mailbox does not exceed the available memory quota. You will not be able to send mail to an overflowing mailbox.
Confirmation of studies, excuse slips and other actions
You can have your own confirmation of study issued in the Information System and then print it out. An electronically sealed study certificate is a full version of a paper study certificate, which would be stamped and signed by a responsible person.
As a learner, you will be required to excuse your absence from compulsory classes during the academic year within 5 working days of the date of the class being excused. You can provide proof of your excuse, such as a doctor's report, at a later date.
You can make a request for an excused absence and perform other study-related tasks in the IS in the Office application.
Study and Examination Regulations
The Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University (SERS MU) is a key document that sets out the rules for all types of study programmes. It deals with the organisation of the academic year, the rights and obligations of students and lecturers, the administration of study departments and the maintenance of study records in the MU IS.
You can test your knowledge of the study regulations in a playful way in the quiz "Become a master of the study regulations!" so that nothing surprises you during your studies.
Scholarships
The university and faculty have various scholarship programs through which they can financially reward their students after meeting certain criteria.
Particularly in the first year you might be interested in:
- Accommodation scholarship for non-Brno students,
- a merit scholarship, or
- scholarship for promising first-year students of Bc. The scholarship is for 1st year students of the Bachelor's degree programme.
Accommodation and boarding at MUNI
Student dormitories and canteens at Masaryk University are taken care of by the Administration of Dormitories and Canteens (SKM). Of the 10 dormitories, Kounicova Dormitory is the closest to FI, and of the 6 canteens, Veveří Canteen at the Faculty of Law is the closest.
Reservations for accommodation are made through the ISKaM accommodation system, and reservations for meals are made through the MobilKredit application or the WebKredit website. To use the canteens, you will need a student identification card.
Freshers' events
Freshers ' Day is MU's official familiarisation event for freshers. Over two days, you'll find out the specifics of the faculty, discover the secrets of the Information System and get tips to make your studies and student life easier. You'll also meet your new classmates and experience your first college party.
Our faculty has a long tradition of the online seminar "Jump to FI", consisting of several sets of online assignments that you can do in the comfort of your home during the holidays. In the first week of teaching, the faculty then physically hosts a "preparation week" - a series of presentations, workshops and team-building activities.
Technology at FI
Computer labs, faculty logins and passwords, remote connections, Wi-Fi... there's a lot of technology at the faculty. You can learn more about them on the Center for Computing Technology (CVT) website.
Dropping out
If you decide not to continue studying the degree programme you have enrolled in, please discontinue your studies as soon as possible. Each day of study is deducted from your statutory free period of undergraduate study and may result in an unwanted assessment of tuition fees in your further studies.
Welcome to the Faculty of Computer Science!
I am glad that you have decided to further your education here.
Studying Computer Science can be challenging, but with your dedication, our inspiring teachers, and a supportive community of fellow students, we have all the ingredients to make it work together.
Our faculty aims to provide a high level of professional education while giving you the freedom to choose your course of study. Graduates appreciate the balance between theory and practice, which has given them a good foundation for a successful professional career.
Already during your studies, you have the opportunity to work with industrial partners or engage in research projects, not only at our faculty, but also in a university-wide environment. The possibilities are countless and the choice is yours.
I look forward to seeing you at the enrolment!
