The Laboratory of Electronic and Multimedia Applications (LEMMA) develops applications and technologies for processing big collections of data (mostly documents for digital libraries), including the production and post-production of films. These application-driven technologies are developed towards open informatics. LEMMA is a playground where research is currently being done in three areas:

  1. Information Retrieval: the representation, similarity and indexing of STEM documents for digital libraries and plagiarism detection: e.g. digital library project EuDML with math formulae searching and document similarity search software library gensim.
  2. Machine learning methods for classification, categorisation, feature extraction, curse of dimensionality problem: c.f. project of gait recognition from Motion Capture data..
  3. Multimedia production: there is tradition of movie festival of Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University, based solely on original movies produced by students of Masaryk University.

“Research in the laboratory is highly multidisciplinary and application-driven. The laboratory cooperates with other FI labs, including the laboratory of the Natural Language Processing Centre (text processing), DISA (gait and multimedia indexing), Sitola, the Laboratory of Advanced Networking Technologies (video), AGD+M, and the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory (animations, graphics, interaction design).“
