Format of the State Final Examination

The state final examination consists of the defence of the Bachelor’s thesis and an oral examination. Each part is assessed separately. If a student passes only one of these two parts, they must retake only the part in which they were assessed as ‘failed’. In accordance with the Dean’s Regulation on the retake of the Bachelor’s state final examination, a resit examination is also scheduled for September.

The oral examination takes place before an examination board. During the examination, the student is required to respond to questions from the board. Questions are drawn at random according to the chosen degree programme. The questions are divided into subject areas. The student draws one question from each subject area.

In the event of negative assessments of the Bachelor’s thesis, the student may choose to withdraw from the defence, accept a ‘fail’ mark and proceed directly to the examination. In the event of a failed defence, it is not possible to withdraw from the examination.

The grounds for failing the Bachelor’s state examinations are:

• The student is unable to explain (even intuitively) any of the concepts explicitly stated in the wording of the question.
• The student is able to formulate definitions of the concepts but is unable to apply them in practice, even in a basic example.
• The student is familiar with the concepts explicitly stated in the question, but only at a superficial level, and is unable to respond to follow-up questions.
• A lack of knowledge regarding one question (i.e. a grade F) cannot be offset by brilliant knowledge of a question drawn from another topic area.

Language: The examination is conducted in Czech or Slovak. A thesis written in English may be defended in English.

Timetable: The state bachelor’s examination consists of the defence of the bachelor’s thesis and an oral examination. The entire state examination lasts 40 minutes (approximately 15 minutes for the defence, 20 minutes for the examination, and 5 minutes for administrative matters). Students have 8 minutes to present their bachelor’s thesis, with a further approximately 7 minutes devoted to analysing the assessors’ reports and discussion.
