Changes in final theses and their Dean's awards

TL;DR: fixed minimum, maximum and recommended number of standard pages, the Dean's award becomes a competition for up to 20 000 CZK

    Hi,

There were two regulations published today regarding final theses at FI:

Note that the English translation of these two regulations should be posted in the upcoming weeks.

The first mentioned change introduces, in addition to the previously existing lower limit, a recommendation and an upper limit for the number of standard pages of the thesis, separately for the Bachelor's thesis (min. 20, expected 40, max. 60) and the Master's thesis (min. 30, expected 50, max. 70). For less than the minimum, but also for more than the maximum standard pages, the thesis is subject to a “failed” grade. There have also been modifications to the texts in connection with the second change:

The Dean's Award for Outstanding Theses was previously mentioned in passing in the aforementioned Theses directive and simultaneously in the measure on Scholarship programmes. The rules have now been consolidated into one document – from all nominations for the Dean's Award, a committee will select 10 finalists, from which the top 3 will receive scholarships of 10 000, 15 000 and 20 000 CZK (approx. 400, 600 and 800 €). The previous flat-rate scholarship amount for the Dean's Award, valid until September 2024, was 12 000 CZK.

For the sake of completeness, I would like to add that the previous version of the Theses directive from December 2024 primarily adjusted the grading of final theses from grades (A–F) to a verbal evaluation (passed with excellent results / passed / failed) in accordance with the new MU Study and Examination Regulations, valid from 1 September 2024.

    EDIT 2025-04-08

Based on feedback from students, the following has been achieved:

    1. In addition to this semester's thesis advisors, an email has gone out to all students that are currently finishing their studies.
    2. It was originally intended to release these changes before the start of this semester, but unfortunately this did not happen. In return, the maximum standard pages will not be applied harshly this semester. If anyone is at risk of failing their thesis this semester purely because of the standard page cap, don't hesitate to reach out.
    3. There has already been a linking of the current version of the regulations on the thesis page of the FI website.
Thus, I believe that these regulations will result in improving the quality of FI theses without further complications.
