From the faculty

    Don't be afraid to ask!

If you are interested in studying at the Faculty of Informatics at MU, follow the story of one of our students.

Lea Petřivalská decided to apply to FI thanks to the diverse opportunities the faculty offers. In addition to studying mathematical informatics, she is now trying to pass on her experience to other applicants thanks to her new role as a faculty "face". Read our interview to find out what she has revealed about herself, what tasks does such a faculty ambassador holds, and at which public events you can meet Lea.

Please introduce yourself, where are you from and why did you choose FI?

I'm a native of Rosice, but I consider myself a Brno native as well. I went to high school in Brno, I have most of my friends and hobbies here, and of course the faculty. At FI, I am studying a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a focus on Mathematical Informatics. I chose FI mainly because I was impressed by the spectrum of study and scientific focuses it offers. During high school, I also met several FI lecturers and students who inspired me on my journey. And since I've been studying here, that list is only growing...

What motivated you to become the face of FI? What was the selection process like?

The opportunity to become the face of FI intrigued me because in my experience, personal contact and identification of applicants with faculty students can be crucial in the choice of a degree. Therefore, I am looking forward to meeting new applicants in particular. The casting for the faculty face consisted of a group meeting where the FI marketing department presented the form of collaboration and we then introduced ourselves to them. I was a little nervous beforehand but there was no reason to be, it was not a long or stressful process.

What does the role entail? How do you plan to get involved?

Faculty faces represent the faculty in the admissions campaign. It's not just about participating in photo shoots and filming, although that's part of it. Personal contact with potential students is an integral part of it - whether it's at faculty open days, general Open Day, or other university events. It is thus an opportunity to be not only the face, but actually also a kind of voice of the faculty. That's what I like about it. I have been in the role for a relatively short time, so the specific ways in which I get involved at FI are still being discovered. But I am open to opportunities as they come.

Among other things, your photo appeared on this year's Study at FI brochure? How do you like the brochure?

I think it's very good, it looks modern and engaging. I must admit though, seeing my photo in the corridors of FI is still unusual and a bit of a funny feeling!

What is your strength or even superpower?

I think my strength is that I am a big optimist by foundation. Which could be considered a superpower during some challenging times, such as exam period /laughs/. But above all, I value in myself and in others the ability to communicate, which I think I capitalize on quite a lot even in the role of a faculty face.

Which area of computer science is closest to your heart?

Since the beginning of my studies I have been profiling myself in a more theoretical direction. However, the specific area for me has changed over time - I have been drawn to everything from artificial intelligence, to logic, to quantum computing. My undergraduate work is in mathematical logic and computational complexity - and I'll probably stick with that field for a while now.

What are your plans for the future?

I don't plan too far ahead for the future, but something I've been wanting to do for a long time is a study or work experience abroad. And given the opportunities our school offers, I don't think that's an unrealistic dream at all. But the nearest goal for me now is my bachelor's degree, after that I will start planning more specifically.

What advice would you give to this year's applicants?

To not be afraid to ask questions and to experiment - that goes for the process of choosing a degree and the study itself! And to come along to one of the events we hold for applicants, where we can talk together about anything they might be interested in regarding their studies.

    Thank you for the interview.

You can meet Lea and our other student faces and ambassadors, for example, at faculty open days or the Gaudeamus Brno fair. We look forward to seeing you!
