  • Lecture title:
Videoconferencing in High Definition (HD) video

  • Annotation:
High-definition video - the so-called High Definition video - is slowly becoming part of the latest trends in consumer electronics. High resolution (1920x1080) provides excellent image quality, allowing you to track even previously unavailable details. The decline in electronics prices, with full HD video support, has enabled these technologies to be deployed in video conferencing. However, if we do not want to delay the data conveyed to videoconferencing partners unnecessarily, we need to use HD video without compression. This, however, generates enormous data streams of 1.5 Gb per second for each HD video stream being sent, the distribution of which is not easy in today's networks.

Through the technology of HD videoconferencing, lectures of the subject "Introduction to Supercomputer" in the spring semester were provided at the Faculty of Informatics. Lectures in Louisiana (State in the South of USA) lectured prof. T. Sterling and the distribution technology, developed in collaboration with Masaryk University and CESNET, were transmitted in the form of uncompressed HD videos to five other sites, including Brno. The high quality of the transmitted image contributed to creating a sense of direct participation in a lecture more than 7000 km away.
In our lecture we will focus on information about what components are necessary for this form of videoconferencing, what are the advantages and the way of further development.
