Brno recognizes talented PhD students from FI
The competition Brno Ph.D. Talent 2024 already knows its winners! This year, the South Moravian Centre for International Mobility (JCMM) in cooperation with the City of Brno has selected 25 promising young scientists to be awarded scholarships to support further research.
We are proud of two laureates from the Faculty of Informatics - Mgr. Jakub Balabán and Mgr. Martin Kurečka (see photo). Details of their research can be found below. We warmly congratulate both, as well as other awardees from MUNI and other universities. A report from the ceremony was brought by M Magazine.

Project: Twin-Width: Parameterized Algorithms and Structural Properties
Supervisor: prof. RNDr. Petr Hliněný, Ph.D.
The aim of the project is to investigate twin-width, a relatively new graph parameter. An algorithm is known that efficiently evaluates any formula of first-order logic on graphs with small twin-width. However, this algorithm requires a small twin-width certificate to be supplied with the input graph. Thus, the main goal of the project is to design algorithms that compute these certificates.

Project: Safe and Reliable Reinforcement Learning Through Constraints and Learnt Models
Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Petr Novotný, Ph.D.
The project focuses on Reinforcement Learning (RL), a method for training autonomous agents such as cars and robots. Although RL has found successful applications in areas such as robotics and finance, the reliability of trained agents remains a key issue. The project has three main goals: to improve the ways in which problems can be modeled as RL tasks, to formally verify the long-term "intentions" of agents, and to develop new monitoring techniques for detecting deviations from these intentions during the course of a program.
