How can a vanished village be brought back to life using modern technology?

Bc. Šárka Portešová, a talented student in the master’s program of Visual Informatics at the Faculty of Informatics, decided to reconstruct the village of Štolnava, which has disappeared from maps forever. She harnessed augmented reality (AR) for this purpose and won several awards for her project. You can read the full interview in the FI MU Alumni Gallery.

Šárka joined the project “Zaniklá sídla Moravy a Slezska” (“Disappeared Settlements of Moravia and Silesia”), and from the very beginning, it was clear that the reconstruction would be an exciting journey. But where do you anchor objects in a village that no longer exists? Eventually, the idea of artificial pillars helped, symbolically marking the original buildings on the site.

A key objective was to make AR technology understandable for first-time users, aided by instructional illustrations and audio guides. “We tested the application in Lužánky Park, and the responses were very positive,” Šárka adds.

Thanks to her supervisor and consultants at the Faculty of Informatics, Šárka received valuable advice — not only about the technology itself but also on testing the application in the field. Her drive and creativity demonstrate that university projects can have a real impact.

Question from the interview: “How did you come up with the idea to reconstruct the vanished village of Štolnava using augmented reality?”

Šárka’s answer: “I didn’t come up with this idea on my own. I was intrigued by the offer from Mgr. Lukáš Pevný to join the project ‘Zaniklá sídla Moravy a Slezska,’ which was carried out by an interdisciplinary team of experts from Mendel University, Masaryk University, and the Academy of Sciences. I was excited right from the start, especially because the project proposal included integrating augmented reality into an app for visitors to the vanished settlement of Prameny (formerly Štolnava) in the Šumperk District.”

Would you like to learn more about the technical challenges, interesting details of the app’s development, or what motivates Šárka in her further studies? You can read the full interview in the Alumni Gallery on the Faculty of Informatics website.
