Red Hat and FI MU expand cooperation
Representatives of the Faculty of Informatics of MU and Red Hat signed a five-year agreement, which covers mutual cooperation within the Association of Industrial Partners of FI MU. Red Hat thus confirms its long-term intention to support and develop research cooperation in the field of open source. It also counts on further support of IT talents in their research projects, in teaching or in writing theses with the help of industry experts.

As one of the founding members of SPP, Red Hat has been associated with the faculty since 2007. Since then, he has supported more than 500 theses and contributed to courses such as Information security and cryptography, Software Quality, Development of Intuitive User Interface and more. The Job Market in IT course led by our graduate and Red Hat Research specialist Marek Grác is also very popular among students. They have the opportunity to learn about career opportunities in IT and how to best prepare during their studies. They also meet directly with industry professionals and hear their stories and experiences.
Research is also an integral part of the collaboration, currently for example the sec-certs project which systematically explores the security certification ecosystem. Within the FI, the project is implemented by the Centre for Research on Cryptography and Security (CRoCS), which focuses on information technology security and applied cryptography. Both, Red Hat and FI MU, are also part of the Cyber-security Excellence Hub in Estonia and South Moravia (CHESS) consortium, an umbrella for Czech-Estonian cooperation for research and innovation in the field of cyber-security.
Red Hat is one of FI's Strategic Industry Partners, the highest category of possible partnerships. Similarly, for Red Hat, the collaboration with FI represents one of the deepest academic collaborations ever. The company offers talented students the opportunity to conduct their research activities and projects in an open-source lab located right in the faculty building.
It is common practice within SPP to have annual contracts at any of the three levels of partnership: Strategic Partner, Partner or SME Partner. "The extraordinary form of the five-year contract is the result of long-term efforts and negotiations on both sides. It brings guaranteed long-term financial support to Bachelor's and Master's students and especially PhD students. At the same time, it is a guarantee for the continuation of a successful partnership and the strength of common ties." explains Jiří Barnat, Dean of FI MU, who welcomed the foreign delegation from Red Hat to the faculty on Wednesday, 20 November 2024. The friendly meeting took place in the new Chill-out Zone, which was created with the financial participation of Red Hat in the FI MU library.
