The success of FI students in the NXP CUP: Two teams advance to the finals in Hamburg!

On Tuesday, May 7, the NXP CUP competition took place at the Faculty of Informatics, where students demonstrated their technical skills and innovation ability. The competition aimed to build an autonomous car capable of traversing a racing circuit quickly while detecting and stopping before an obstacle.

Nine teams from high schools and colleges across the Czech and Slovak Republic, including teams from Uniza and the RoboTrip club, participated in the competition. The students' task was to build racing cars that could navigate the competition course without external help. The track was marked with a white background and bordered with black lines, and the vehicles had to use a camera to navigate. Based on the data from this camera, the cars had to make decisions and be able to navigate not only the delineated course but also the intersection that was part of the qualifying course.

After completing the circuit, the car could continue to the Lap of Honor bonus discipline. During this discipline, the vehicle had to slow down after detecting the finish line and stop no more than 15 centimeters before the obstacle - a white cube of 20x20x20 centimeters. This discipline could earn the team bonus points, which were added to their time points, and could help the team leapfrog faster teams that failed to stop before the obstacle.

We are very proud to announce that two teams from our faculty took the first two places and qualified for the final competition in Hamburg at the end of May. The winning FiCar team, consisting of members Lukáš Poul, Martin Klimeš, and Matyáš Hlavinka, completed the course in a great time of just over 13 seconds. Just one-tenth slower was the EmCar team with members Adam Mydla, Adam Valt, and Vojtěch Szotkowski.

Congratulations to our students on this fantastic achievement, and we wish them good luck in the finals in Hamburg! We hope they will share their impressions of the final with us, and we will let you know about it on social media.
