Doctoral State Exam Topics

Content of the Doctoral State Examination

The doctoral state examination consists of a PhD thesis proposal defence and an oral exam of three topics (for a list of all 20 topics see below). Each topic has its guarantor. The guarantor prepares a list of literature (mainly monographs available at the faculty library) and a list of questions. Topics are approved for each student by the Specialist Board. The choice of topics is based on the supervisor’s proposal and reflects the student’s field of specialisation. The content of at least one of the topics must be theory-oriented and one of the topics must have a practical application. The choice of topics should be directed towards proving a wider knowledge of the field of study. The guarantor consults the supervisor and selects areas of the topic, which the student will be examined on. This selection is made by supervisor and student at least 5 months prior to the examination date and is approved by the Specialist Board. The exam is held in front of an examination board and takes the form of an oral exam. The student is examined on topic knowledge beyond the Master level. The exam dates are given in the academic year timetable.
