External displays for laptops at FI

TL;DR: You can connect a monitor to your laptop on selected computers signposted by us, both in the PC hall and in almost all computer classrooms.

    Hi,

we at SKAS have been asked a few times where the freestanding monitors from the PC hall have gone and whether there is any replacement for them. Yes, there is!

At the beginning of the reconstruction of the faculty building (i.e., at the turn of 2024 and 2025), the monitors did indeed disappear from the PC hall due to the reorganization of the computer classrooms (demolition of existing ones, creation of new ones on the 1st floor of building C).

As a replacement, an island of desktop computers Nymfe37 to Nymfe43 was created directly in the PC hall, where free HDMI / USB-C cables are available for connecting your own laptop (one of each for each computer). Simply plug the free cable into your laptop and you can start using the monitor as an external display – there really should be a free cable there, so there is no need to pull the cable between the desktop and the monitor.

Based on student feedback, the faculty management decided to also install these cables at other computers in the faculty's computer classrooms, typically in the locations closest to the teacher's desk. During the fall, in cooperation with CVT, we marked both situations, in the PC hall and in the computer classrooms, with laminated signs to make it clear where the video cables are located and thus where you should sit. Namely, this applies to computer classrooms A215, A219, C118, C119, C122, C403, and S405; you can also see the location of the cables on the maps of the computer classrooms in the Faculty Administration (you need to log in with your xlogin and faculty password).

And what will happen in the near future? With the start of this exam period, all desktop computers should be permanently moved from S405 to the PC hall to its currently unoccupied desks, while new machines will be purchased for S405. As SKAS, we attached a condition to this move at the October Dean's Council meeting, which was that the number of video cables in the PC hall should increase. It remains to be seen how that will turn out.
