The faculty's sustainability strategy is in the works
TL;DR: the university strategy and faculty’s work-in-progress were presented, ideas were brainstormed, and a questionnaire for students and employees will be released
Hi,
This Monday, an open meeting on sustainability at our faculty was held in the library, and I would like to briefly report on its proceedings here.
For context, a university-wide sustainable development strategy document was created last year, and this year each of the faculties/institutes are to follow up with their own documents. The university-wide document, valid for 2025–2028, is based on four pillars—education, science and research, the university environment, and responsibility and inner culture—which will also be followed by the faculty strategy.
At the meeting, Mgr. Veronika Jirsová, head of the Office for Research and Project Support at FI MU, presented slides about the current status, possible measures, and related indicators in each of the four pillars. I have attached the slides to this text. I feel the need to emphasize that the goal of all this is not to create a self-imposed burden (for the faculty), but to tactfully integrate the principles of sustainable development into the faculty's activities.
Some of the bullet points from the slides were discussed further, and in addition, various topics were raised in the subsequent brainstorming session, for example, financial support for sustainability in the faculty budget, student and staff meeting spaces, education of the public in the areas of cybersecurity or artificial intelligence, waste separation at the faculty premises, providing technical support to senior citizens, or involving companies in project-based programming courses. A questionnaire about what everyone envisions regarding sustainability at the faculty should be sent out to all students and employees during the fall.
Finally, I would like to mention that, in addition to the creation of these strategic documents, the second annual ComMUNIty Fund took place this spring, which is an internal competition for up to CZK 100,000 for sustainable or socially responsible activities, in which MU students can submit their ideas directly. A similar call is expected to run next year, so we can start thinking ahead about how to use the fund to benefit our faculty.
