The semester started a week early: AMBIA 2026 Summer School held at the Faculty of Informatics
While most students were still enjoying the final days of their summer break, a group of image analysis and processing enthusiasts began their semester a week early.
From 6 to 12 September 2026, the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University hosted the fifth edition of the AMBIA (Advanced Methods in Biomedical Image Analysis) Summer School. The summer school has been held every three years since 2017 and is organised by the Centre for Biomedical Image Analysis (CBIA) at FI MU. The main organisers of this year’s edition were Prof. Michal Kozubek and Assoc. Prof. David Svoboda.
What did the summer school offer its participants?
Master’s and doctoral students from countries around the world took part in a programme combining theoretical lectures with practical exercises. The sessions were led by experts from Czechia, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The academic programme also included a poster session, during which participants had the opportunity to present their own research and receive valuable feedback from fellow participants and lecturers.

The programme focused on advanced methods of biomedical image processing and analysis and covered topics such as:
-
biomedical image deconvolution and registration,
-
advanced mathematical morphology,
-
image segmentation, object detection and tracking,
-
synthetic image data generation,
-
method benchmarking and validation,
-
large-scale image data processing.
In addition to the intensive academic programme, participants could also enjoy informal social activities. These included a gala dinner, while the week culminated in a Saturday trip to the Moravian Karst, including visits to the Sloup–Šošůvka Caves and the Macocha Abyss.

The summer school was held with the support of the Czech-BioImaging national research infrastructure and the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University. We would like to thank all participants for their commitment and the CBIA organisers for preparing another successful edition!
