Hana Rudová Opens PATAT 2026 in Nottingham

Hana Rudová, Head of the Department of Machine Learning and Data Processing at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University, delivered the opening keynote at PATAT 2026, held at the University of Nottingham from 25 to 28 August.

The international PATAT conference (Practice and Theory of Automated Timetabling) takes place every two years and is the leading scientific forum for research into automated timetabling and related optimisation problems.

In her talk, Elegance of Simplicity: Designing Metaheuristics for Real-World Applications, she demonstrated how simplicity and simplification in algorithm design can be essential to achieving generality and robustness. Drawing on examples from educational timetabling, vehicle routing and other domains, she presented the use of metaheuristics to solve real-world optimisation problems.
