South Moravian Region honored its distinguished figures: Barbora Bühnová was awarded in memoriam prize for her contributions to science

Doc. Ing. RNDr. Barbora Bühnová, Ph.D., made significant contributions to the development of digital education and the advancement of women in technical fields. At the Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University, she focused primarily on software architecture and the security of critical information infrastructures. She also served as Vice Dean for External Relations and Partnerships and developed the Association of Industrial Partners at FI MU. She was a co-founder and board member of the nonprofit organization Czechitas, which helps women achieve change through the development of digital and IT skills.

“She was an exceptional person with many admirable qualities, about which I could tell countless stories. Nothing was impossible for her,” recalls Martin Macák, her longtime colleague at FI MU.

As a co-founder of the organization Czechitas, she helped pave the way into the world of information technology for thousands of women and girls. She played a key role in changing perceptions of women’s roles in IT and technology in the Czech Republic and abroad, where she was involved in numerous initiatives aimed at engaging more women in technical fields. She passed away in December 2024 after a long illness. Her legacy, however, remains alive and serves as an inspiration for society as a whole. For example, the Czechitas Endowment Fund of Bára Bühnová was established by the organisation to help disadvantaged groups finance their path to IT.

Jan Grolich, Governor of the South Moravian Region, honored Barbora Bühnová this year for her contributions to science. “She managed to inspire others with the idea that technology should be accessible to everyone. Thanks to her energy and courage, the world of IT has opened up to thousands of women and girls. With this award, we also want to pay tribute to her and thank her for her legacy,” he said.

The awards ceremony took place on May 12, 2026, at the Milosrdných bratří Hall on Vídeňská Street in Brno. Regional representatives approved the awards for a total of twelve exceptional individuals for the year, several of whom are associated with Masaryk University, at their December meeting. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all.
