Students organized the IT competition Tour de App. The Grand Finale took place at FI MU

The Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University once again became a meeting place for high school students interested in technology.

This year, the Grand Finale of the fourth edition of the Tour de App competition – a unique IT contest for high school students, organized by both high school and university students – took place at FI MU.

Tour de App connects programming with real-world practice. Competing in teams of two to three, participants do not solve traditional algorithmic problems but instead develop web applications based on an assignment that simulates a real client project. In addition to development itself, they also work on user interface design and communication with the “client”.

This year’s edition launched in October 2025 and involved 144 teams from 88 schools. More than half of the participating schools – 45 in total – were newcomers to the competition. For the first time, the competition also expanded internationally, with teams from Poland and Germany taking part.

Grand Finale at FI MU: simulating real-world development

The competition culminated at FI MU, which has long been a partner and co-organizer of the event. The faculty not only provided facilities for the Grand Finale but also financially supported the competition.

During the finale, participants experienced working on a project in an even more realistic way than in previous rounds. They met with representatives of the “client” in various roles – from lecturer and methodologist to project manager – and, based on their input, refined and further developed their applications.

A new evaluation approach was also introduced, focusing on the application's overall functionality and quality from the user’s perspective. Five top teams were selected for the final round, along with one wildcard entry.

A competition created by students for students

The project is organized by the Students Can Grow Association, whose members are high school and university students. They are responsible for organizing the competition, preparing the assignments, and communicating with participants. The aim is to give students the opportunity to experience real-world application development and to gain skills typically learned only in professional environments.

The Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University has been involved in the project for a long time and supports activities that connect education with practice and motivate high school students to pursue studies in IT.
