In this year's performance, the IT student company decided to tackle a more serious topic and touch the souls of the audience

    Press release

ProFIdivadlo will soon present its new production - a modern adaptation of Jaroslav Havlíček's novel grotesque The Man of Six Sisters. The play is based on the author's expressionist theatre adaptation, which was published posthumously in 1998. In its current form it will be presented by a student ensemble operating at the Faculty of Informatics of Masaryk University. The first performance will take place in the Cabaret des Péchés at the beginning of June.

The story begins innocently. A well-known prankster, Emil Škvor, bets with his friends to seduce all six Kostka sisters, who have just moved to the city, in one week. But what starts as a game soon turns into a drama. With ironic wit and rawness, Grotesque asks how far one bad joke can go – and what one is willing to sacrifice for a sense of power.

This adaptation of nearly a century-old prose is an uncompromising analysis of interpersonal relationships where morality breaks under the weight of lust and powerlessness. It is a psychological probe into the dark corners of human desire, manipulation and power. It is not just the story of one man and six women – it is a statement about a society that prefers lies to truth, pretense to genuine feeling.

The topic may seem controversial. However, the creators have the ambition to offer the play as a topical take on contemporary issues. "The current tone of this almost outdated work is all the more pressing. At a time when the boundaries of personal autonomy, gender roles and power are constantly being rewritten, Havlicek holds up a mirror to us. Distorted. Deforming. But all the more true. Our production does not seek redemption. It doesn't judge, but invites us to look inside – at others and at ourselves," says director Daniel Dvořák.

Just like in previous years, the students composed their own music. "Previous years the music was more jazz, last year's rhythmical performance Smoke was very specific musically.  This year we decided to go more decadent, a bit metal, underground style. We also focused a lot on capturing the inner contradiction of the main character," says Petr Janíček, the head of the music section.

A big challenge for the ensemble was the change of venue. Due to the renovation of Building D, where it has been performing for over 25 years, this year for the first time it is rehearsing and performing in a new environment - the KYPO lecture room of the Faculty of Informatics. "We had to reinvent everything we were well versed in over the years. To reinvent the lights technically in a new and different space, to tackle the non-existent backstage that we created out of folding screens. Before every rehearsal we have to rearrange the tables to create at least a provisional stage. The KYPO premises are used for teaching and we have to adapt to these conditions," said Tomáš Zelina, the producer, giving an insight behind the curtain.

Despite all the obstacles, there is already a lot of interest in the production - bookings opened on Sunday 11 May and tickets are disappearing fast. "Every year I'm skeptical if it ends up being a good show. But this year's play has the predisposition to dazzle the audience as well," shared the course supervisor Assoc. Prof. PhDr. Josef Prokeš, Ph.D.

The production of The Man of Six Sisters can be seen three times - the premiere will take place on Sunday 1 June at 8:00 pm, the reprise and the dernière the following day at 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm at the Cabaret des Péchés.
