Comparing synonyms: Click on the Sketch Engine's Thesaurus button, enter a word and POS and a list of synonyms is generated. This is done as a statistical process and produces some surprising results, especially as you move down the list. Very important and useful is what you get when you click on one of them: a Sketch Difference, showing the differences between a pair of synonyms, at least in terms of their colligations and collocations. Although it is not possible at the moment to compare the text types in which the pair of words is used, this will one day be an option. And that is also a useful indicator of the difference. |
