Web-based courses in pronunciation

The Virtual Language Centre

This starts with a description of the organs of speech and then moves on to specific sounds, with pronunciation examples and a variety of exercises giving feedback. For a fun intro to the VLC, go to their preview page and listen to the synthesized speech and incidental music that might make you wonder what horrors the English language has in store!

Pronunciation from Okanagan College, Canada,

This requires Quicktime, Shockwave and Acrobat. It is a methodical approach to sounds that people need to study and practise. There are thirteen lessons with videos showing how the mouth makes certain sounds, little video mini-lectures, activities where you listen to similar words and choose the one you heard, and a range of other things. As you will see at the top of their page, you have to have certain software components installed. Remember that some English sounds present problems for speakers of some languages, while presenting no problem to people with other first languages.

Soundguide

On this website, you will hear several dictations with words or sentences read aloud. You will be able to test your ability to understand and transcribe them accurately.
