Near Rotorua (central north island), there is a model village showing NZ Maori heritage for tourists. Surely safer than meeting real face-tatooed Maori warriors on a street...

The area between Rotorua and Taupo has some of the most beautiful displays of volcanic activities. Seeing Wai-O-Tapu volcanic area is gorgeous, despite crowds of tourists there.
