Doctoral Study
Doctoral studies are designed for graduates of the Master's study programmes Informatics, Applied Science, or any related programme. At the present time there are accredited four-year degree program Informatics field of study Informatics and new field of study Computer Systems and Technology. The both fields of study are in full-time and combined form and in Czech and English languages. Faculty encourages doctoral students by its technical equipment needed for their work. Cooperation with other departments (national and also international) and grant aid agencies allows students to attend professional conferences, summer schools or complete a part of their studies abroad. By the end of 2011 the Faculty has 94 doctoral graduates. There are currently studying over a hundred and thirty doctoral students at the faculty.
Graduates of doctoral field of study Informatics are able to do individual creative, research and organizational work. They are equipped with knowledge and skills that enable them to solve challenging research and development problems in computer science and lead research teams engaged in the development and subsequent implementation of new technologies in the field of modern computer science. Graduates can work in academic and also industrial sectors, which occupy higher positions that require nontrivial management, analytical and technical skills.
Field of study Informatics is aimed primarily on basic (investigative) research, that is experimental or theoretical work aimed to acquire new knowledge of fundamental nature. This work may be associated with the experimental verification of the relevance and practical benefit of acquired findings. Typical outputs of basic research in computer science are the articles published in the collections of professional conferences or journals, or experimental implementations which demonstrate the practical benefits of newly acquired knowledge. The evaluation of study results is focused primarily on the quantity and quality of publication outputs.
Field of study Computer Systems and Technologies is focused mainly on applied (targeted) research that is experimental or theoretical work, where is an integral part the acquisition of new knowledge, focusing on specific, concrete and most predetermined recovery targets. The objectives also help to formulate industrial partners of the Faculty of Informatics. The typical outputs of applied research in computer science are fully functional software works or methodological procedures of creating systems, based on published and original ideas and principles. The evaluation of study results is the emphasis on practical usability, originality and new scientific contribution of obtained solutions.
The above mentioned specification of both study fields is general the quality of the gained results is always assessed individually. The final evaluation is based on professionalism of Specialist Board members and members of committees for defence of thesis and dissertations.
