Using computers at FI MU

The university network is a complex tool, which lets you enroll for subjects, find out about exam results, obtain study material, work on tasks and communicate with the academic world. You have free access to the computers in rooms A104, B116, B117, B130, B311 except when lessons are being held there. The main computer hall, B106, is reserved all day solely for the students' use. To enter and leave these rooms, you need your MU ISIC card or an alternative (MU-issued) chip card. You must present your ID card whenever you are asked to do so by the CVT staff in these labs.

No eating or drinking is permitted in the labs. Do not leave clothing on the computer desks. Lockers are available for rent from Mrs. Trneckova (B320, 3rd floor, block B). The lockers can be found in a room adjacent to the computer hall.

To use the faculty computers, your account must be active. Having an active account means that the computer will recognise your login and password. New students' accounts provide access to the computers in the computer labs and to the Aisa server which, unlike the stations in the classrooms, is accessible from the whole Internet and on which some specialised subjects will require work to be completed. The Study Department issues you with your identification (UČO – personal university number + primary password) for the Personal Administration within the Information System of Masaryk University. In place of your UČO, you can use virtually any name you wish, which you can set up in the Personal Administration. To use the local faculty systems (computers in labs, student servers, Faculty Administration), you need your "secondary password" and a special login name. The list of UČO's with the assigned logins is on the noticeboard in front of the computer hall. The login is an "x" plus your surname, shortened, if necessary, optionally completed using a number added to distinguish logins that would otherwise be the same. For foreign students the login is created as an "x" plus your UČO. To set up your password complementing the login, go to https://is.muni.cz/auth/system/heslo_fi.pl.

If you already studied at FI, your password to the Faculty Administration might be different from the secondary password. In this case, it is necessary to transfer your password from the Information System here: https://fadmin.fi.muni.cz/auth/sys/zmena_hesla.mpl. If you are unable to log onto any kind of system, double-check that you are using the right keyboard layout (Czech or English), that Caps Lock or Num Lock are how you want them, that you are not confusing the letter "O" with a zero, or the digit "1" with lower case "L".

Let us remind you that once you have been issued with a login, you are bound by the Faculty's rules concerning the use of the computer network. The password was generated in such a way that it cannot be easily guessed while still being easy to remember. Should you want to change it, make sure that your new one contains both numbers and letters and is at last 8 characters long. Remember it and never reveal it to anyone else. Every user is responsible for their account not being misused. Should you have the slightest suspicion that someone is using your password, change it immediately. It is advisable to change your password once every three to six months in any case. If you have the feeling that something inexplicable is happening to your account, e.g. files are missing or being added or the system tells you that you logged in some other time than you expect, contact the system administrator immediately.

To change your password to the local faculty systems, use one of these applications: https://fadmin.fi.muni.cz/auth/sys/zmena_hesla.mpl or https://is.muni.cz/auth/system/heslo_fi.pl. The primary password for Personal Administration in the IS is issued by the Study Department only. Bear in mind that the secondary password and the password to the local faculty systems are different things and that changes to one do not affect the other.

Do not turn the computers off, not even at night, and do not reset them without direct consent of an administrator. Respect the rules concerning the safety and personal space of other users. Not turning off the computers or resetting applies to all stations regardless of the operating system. Never leave without logging out. Correctly logging out is indicated by a new login window. A frozen computer can be often repaired remotely by an administrator without needing to restart the system.

Users of laptops will appreciate the fact that practically the whole faculty has WiFi coverage, which gives students access to a speed-limited Internet connection. For a nominal deposit it is possible to borrow a WiFi card, PCMCIA, from the faculty from Mrs. Lysakova (B503, 5. floor, B block). In the vicinity of the computer hall there are two specially designated workspaces for using Ethernet connection – 100 Mbits/s. One is in front of the hall, and the other is in the corridor between the hall and B116. Both methods of connection (WiFi, Ethernet) require the user to follow certain rules and undergo an authentication process. Details can be found at https://fadmin.fi.muni.cz/auth/sit/wireless/.

Once you exist in the IS, an e-mail box is created automatically. This is UČO@mail.muni.cz, and you can use it directly through the IS. You should check this regularly as all information concerning your studies at MU are sent to this email address. Another mailbox, created for the students at FI, is named login@fi.muni.cz (where login is the xname form mentioned above). The mailbox is accessible directly from any faculty unix system (Aisa, Anxur, unix stations in the computer hall etc.) or via IMAPS/POP3S (server relay.fi.muni.cz).
