Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing

Field of study: Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing
Responsible person: doc. PhDr. Karel Pala, CSc.
Responsible workplace: Department of Information Technologies

The field of study Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) concentrates on obtaining basic knowledge in the area of AI, i.e. computer systems that think and behave as humans. Closely related is NLP specialization, which deals with "human" languages such as Czech, English, ...both in written and spoken form from the point of view of informatics. In this context we name it “language engineering”.

Tuition structure

In this study field students gain knowledge necessary for understanding of methods of natural language processing and detail view on computer synthesis and analysis of speech, corpuses and machine learning. Students with good knowledge of English can participate in programme European Masters in Language and Speech, after graduation they obtain prestigious certificate.

Total list of subjects you can find in electronic study catalogue. We can mention at least the following subjects:
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Corpus Tools
  • Dialogue Systems
  • Machine learning and natural language processing
  • Semantics and Communication
  • Introduction to Machine Translation
  • Speech signal processing
  • Digital Libraries

Laboratořry

For tuition of the Artifitial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing the faculty is equipped with modern techniques. The Laboratory of Natural Language Processing offers powerful servers for work with wide text documents and specific software for work with natural language, e.g. morphological and syntactic analysators, tools for work with corpuses, software (platform DEB) for work with electronic lexical databases and semantic network (WordNet). The other lab is the Laboratory of Search and Dialogue managed by doc. RNDr. Ivanem Kopečkem, CSc. a prof. Ing. Pavlem Zezulou, CSc.. The Knowledge Discovery Group, managed by doc. RNDr. Lubomírem Popelínským, Ph.D. is also part of the field. Laboratories are open to students of all study fields.
