Image Processing

Field of study: Image Processing
Responsible person: doc. RNDr. Michal Kozubek, Ph.D.
Responsible workplace: Department of Computer Graphics and Design

The student gains a comprehensive overview in the field of acquisition and processing of image information starting with simple image modifications using point transforms or linear filters and ending up with sophisticated tools such as mathematical morphology or deformable models. Graduates are able to design and coordinate development of software systems for image information processing in research (e.g., research in molecular biology using microscopy imaging techniques), in medicine (e.g., ultrasound imaging, magnetic resonance, CT) as well as in industry (e.g., fingerprint or retina recognition, processing records of security or traffic cameras).

Tuition structure

Study field offers basic and advanced courses in the field of image processing. In this courses students have change to meet with basic algorithms using by standard or professional programs for image processing (Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, ...) and to understand their function. Students can also gain basic knowledge of instrumentation laboratory techniques. Few practical courses and seminars offer to students an opportunity to verify learned information.
Total list of subjects you can find in electronic study catalogue. We can mention at least the following subjects:
  • Digital Image Processing
  • Advanced Methods of Digital Image Processing
  • Digital Geometry
  • Digital Filtering
  • Image Acquisition
  • Scientific Instruments

Laboratory

Our laboratory is interdisciplinary workplace. It means that team of biologists who produced images through available technical equipment closely cooperates with the informatics team that try to analysing these data with using eligible algorithms for image processing. Part of the team works in laboratory where the cell-preparations is created and scanned to the computer through microscope. By this scanning we gain wide image sequences with capacity of lots of gigabytes. Processing of so wide image data call for creation of own programs that we develop too.
One from the aims of our laboratory is to transmit our knowledge and skills to ingoing generations. For this purpose we teach few courses which put detailed mind to the image analysis problems and questions.
